Welcome to Bright United Men's Shed
A friendly community where people come together to create, learn and connect. From woodwork and metalwork to community projects and good conversation, it's all about making things, sharing skills and building friendships. Here, we believe in giving something back: one for you, one for our Shed, and one for the community.
A cuppa, biscuits and good conversations. All welcome.
The heart of it
Everything we do comes back to three things, and they're built right into our motto.
“I came in to fix a chair. I stayed for the blokes.”
Your own projects, at your own pace. Pick up a skill, finish that job you've been putting off, or just enjoy making something with your hands.
“We all chip in to keep the doors open.”
Keeping the doors open. Working bees, repairs, a bit of fundraising, and the shared upkeep that keeps the place running for everyone.
“What we make, we give back to Bright.”
Giving back to Bright and the valleys. Builds for the school, repairs for neighbours, and a stall at the market. Our work doesn't stay in the shed.
What we do
Six benches, three workshops and a clubroom. Come for one thing and stay for the lot. Every activity has a mentor on hand.
Furniture, toys, repairs and the odd birdbox. Full set of bench tools and a hand to guide you.

Turn timber into bowls, vases, spoons and even toys. Beginners are genuinely welcome.

MIG, stick and braze. Trailers, gates and garden art. Safety gear and one-on-one instruction provided.

Lathe work, drilling, grinding and the metal bandsaw. Fabrication and repairs in steel and alloy.

A two-post car hoist and bench space for the home mechanic. Service your own vehicle with a hand nearby.

3D printing, laser cutting and CNC routing. We go at your pace, no jargon and no rush.

Plenty happens here without a machine running. A cuppa, a game of cards, and mates who keep an eye out for one another.
Cards and the teaching kitchen. Sometimes the most important tool here is the kettle.
Come and visit
Because a shed looks after the whole man. Time on the tools, a cuppa and a yarn, and mates who notice when you're not yourself. No pressure and no fuss, just blokes keeping an eye out for blokes.

Shedder spotlight
“I joined BUMS in 2012 to learn woodturning and lend a hand with the development of the Shed. What I found was much more than a workshop. Through the guidance of great mentors and the friendship of fellow Shedders, I discovered a strong sense of belonging and camaraderie that has enriched my life, reduced social isolation, and improved my wellbeing. I am proud to be part of an organisation that values community and giving back. My journey with BUMS has been both rewarding and memorable.”
“I retired in 2021 and moved from Queensland to Bright, worried about losing my sense of purpose outside work. Joining the Men’s Shed was a big part of my plan against that. It connected me to gentlemen at all stages of retirement, who became friends and mentors and tempered my over-confident approach to DIY. It also tied me to Bright through the community projects we took on. As I near a second retirement, the Shed will help me live a happy and meaningful life.”
“I joined BUMS a few years ago as a way to access some amazing tools like the table saw and a huge work space for big projects. I've met most of the blokes in the Shed now and have had some really great experiences, learning from them about welding and woodworking. There is a wealth of knowledge in the Shed and the guys are happy to provide their decades of experience and help. I'm on my second big project, decking out my van to become a cozy campervan, I'm about half way through. My favourite tools are the table saw and the drop saw.”
