A guide, not a substitute for your induction. These are general good-practice notes. Always follow your induction and the Floor Management Team's directions for this machine.

Belt sander (linisher)

Medium risk Induction required

A linishing sander runs a continuous abrasive belt to shape and smooth timber and metal quickly, flattening edges and knocking off sharp corners.

  • Two-member rule
Don't work alone on this one
  • Before you start
Complete a belt sander (linisher) induction

Using it safely

General good practice for a belt sander (linisher). Your induction covers the specifics for the machine at our shed.

  • Check the belt trackingMake sure the belt is centred and tracking true before you start, and that guards are in place.
  • Sand on the down sideHold work against the part of the belt moving down towards the table so it pushes the piece down, not up at you.
  • Keep a firm gripHold the workpiece firmly and keep fingers well clear of the moving belt and disc.
  • Light, steady pressureLet the abrasive do the work. Too much pressure burns the timber and overheats the belt.
  • Mind the heatMetal and small parts get hot fast. Keep a tin of water nearby and watch for sparks near dust.
  • Never work aloneThis is medium-risk gear, so at least one other inducted member must be in the workshop with you.
  • Unsure? Ask the Floor Management TeamAlways better to ask. They're happy to help and there's no silly question.

Before you start

An induction is required

Before using the belt sander (linisher) for the first time, you'll do a short, friendly hands-on induction with an experienced member. We'll walk you through setup, safe operation and how to stop safely, at your own pace.

Organise one with our Floor Management Team on any open day, or call the shed on 03 5750 1120. Already inducted? Remember the two-member rule still applies.
